Sewing Tips
Working with faux fur can be challenging, but using the correct techniques will help you achieve professional-looking results. Follow these essential tips when sewing faux fur fabrics:
• Mark the nap direction: Faux fur has a natural nap (the direction the fur lies). Mark this clearly on all pattern pieces to ensure the nap runs in the same direction once sewn.
• Cut from the reverse side: Always turn the fabric over and cut from the knitted backing. A sharp craft knife is ideal, but sharp scissors can also be used. This helps protect the fur fibres.
• Secure seamlines before cutting: Pin or stay-stitch along seamlines before trimming the fur to prevent movement while sewing.
• Select the correct needle: A heavier needle is recommended. A size 14/16 denim needle works well, or alternatively a 100/16 or 110/18 universal needle with polyester or polycotton thread.
• Use a walking foot: A walking foot combined with a longer stitch length helps feed the fabric evenly and prevents pulling or tension.
• Pull fibres through seams: Before trimming seams, gently pull all fur fibres through to the right side to avoid visible cut lines in the pile.
